SUBJECT: GEOGRAPHY YEAR 10/11

Course Content/Skills

We follow the Southern Examining Group syllabus B.

The Geography GCSE consists of 4 modules plus coursework:

* People and Urban Change

* Leisure, Recreation and Tourism

* The Physical Environment

* Economic Development

Each module covers a number of topics. For example `The Physical Environment' includes a study of Rivers, Coasts, Natural Hazards and Weather & Climate. These modules are assessed by an exam worth 50% of the final grade.

The coursework must be based on primary data collection by the students. We take them to Chichester in the summer term and they are then expected to produce a city centre study. This is worth 25% of their GCSE. If they complete the project successfully it is possible to gain full marks.

The final 25% of the GCSE is a skills based paper in which students are expected to apply their data handling and decision-making skills applied to a real planning situation on a current affairs issue.

Presentation of work is very important. No special equipment is required but every student should come equipped with pens, a pencil, a rubber, a ruler and colours. A calculator may be needed in some lessons.

Assessment Procedures

Throughout the course students will be familiarised with past paper questions. In addition these will be used in the Year 10 and mock exams. Progress through a module will be monitored using the homeworks.

Homework

Students are set one homework a week. Each homework should take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Homework exercises are varied and may include research, learning, a practical exercise or a written task. In the second half of the summer term homework time is set aside as additional coursework time.

Marking Policy

Homeworks are marked in line with the whole school policy

Text Books

We use the `Key Geography for GCSE' series by David Waugh at GCSE.

Students are given a copy of "The Wider World" for reading, research and private study.
