SUBJECT: RELIGIOUS STUDIES YEAR 10/11

Course Content/Skills

The Year 10 Religious Studies course follows the GCSE, SEG, Syllabus A, Option 1: The Christian Church and consists of eight modules, covering the following topics:

* Background, the main divisions of Christianity, the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions

* Sacred Writings, the Old Testament, the New Testament

* Beliefs, the Nicene Creed, the double commandment of the love of God and the love of thy neighbour

* Worship, public worship, places for worship, Holy Communion, Eucharist, Mass, Lord's Supper, liturgy, leaders of worship, priests, pastors, ministers, private worship, prayer, meditation, aids to worship

* Festivals and fasts, the Christian year and the liturgical cycle, Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost

* Rites of Passage, Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, funeral rites

* Moral behaviour and social practice, the family, justice, crime and punishment, humanity, charity and aid, developing countries

* Pilgrimage

Each of these modules is based on a specially produced booklet giving all the essential relevant information about the course and providing a variety of tasks for pupils. A copy of this booklet is issued to every pupil.

Assessment Procedures

There is a test at the end of each module. The final end of year grades are based upon the average module test score (50%) and the summer examination score (50%).

Homework

Two units of homework, of at least one hour's duration, are set per fortnight. This work is usually written, but may be revision in preparation for a test or examination or research for coursework.

Coursework

Pupils produce a unit of coursework on Christian Initiation, in connection with Module 6.

Marking Policy

All work is marked in line with the whole school marking policy.

Text Books

There is no one set textbook for this course. Pupils use a wide variety of books and other resources. All pupils should have easy and permanent access to a text of the Bible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Chapman, 1994, is an important reference book.
