Genealogy requests from around the world re: Berrie

Launched 09/05/2002 Updated 11th March 2003

Here are genealogy requests received from Berrie's around the world, who may or may not have asked to be added to the e-mail list. If anyone wants their genealogy requests added to this page, just e-mail "webmaster at berrie dot com"

I found Peter's reply to Debra Gibson particularly interesting.... If it weren't for what may be some sort of clerical error back in 1819, then maybe I would be publishing on  www.berry.com instead, it would appear.

Jill Nobles' reply to this page, 18th July 2002:

Hi, I'm sending this email to everyone on the "berrie genealogy requests" page that I stumbled upon today.

My relation the the Berrie line is through my mother's father:  Emmons "Jud" Cornelius Berrie.  He was born in Aiken, S.C. (March 1909).  His first cousin, Clarice Isabelle Berrie Skinner, did some genealogy work on the Berrie side, which I have extracted (from her writings) and put in to a chart in MS Excel.  She was able to trace the line back to James Berrie, birth date unknown, who was a Huguenot and emigrated to Charleston County S.C. ~1720, fleeing religious persecution.  Anyone who would like this spreadsheet sent by email, or by regular mail, just let me know (please include your regular address if applicable)- but note that it is in Excel, and if you are unfamiliar with this software, a hard copy might be better.

Debbie, you said that your father is Marion Eugene Berrie of Orangeburg, S.C.  I have in my notes that Clarice (mentioned above) had a nephew from the same location named Marion E. Berrie! So, that means that your g-father and my g-father are 1st cousins...  which means we are cousins three times removed? Or is it 3rd cousins??  Anyhow, the information that you have about your grandfather's children (your aunts and uncles) would be helpful to me.

Thanks, Jill Nobles (e-mail) "jillnobles at cs dot com"

Peter Berrie's reply to Debbie, 9th January 2002:

Hi Debra. As Nigel said, I'm the genealogist in our family. Our Berrie roots go back to our g-g-grandfather John Berrie (1819-1888) who was born in South East Scotland. John's father is shown on his birth record as William
BERRY. William's marriage to Janet McMillan also shows his surname as BERRY.

I'm fairly sure that William was local to that part of Scotland, although its possible he came over from Ireland. In any case, nobody in our BERRIE line has migrated to any other part of the world, as far as I know.

Until a few years ago, I was in touch with my namesake, Peter Michael Berrie. He lived in North Pole , Alaska, and had family in a few other parts of the States. Sadly he died a few years and I don't have regular contact with anybody else in his family. I do know that his grandfather (and his grandfather's twin brother) were born in the UK and left for the US, probably around the time of one of the Gold Rushes in Alaska. According to Peter, they left the UK in a hurry, having run off with their employers coach and horses and having (one of them!) made his daughter pregnant as well!

I would be very interested to hear about your BERRIE roots. You mentioned that your father was Marion Eugene BERRIE. I see from Social Security online records that he was born on 20 May 1925. Do you know where he was born and do you know anything about his parents and grandparents?

Do write back and tell me more. In particular, if you know of any, even vague, family connections to the UK, I'd be happy to help you try and find out more.

Regards
Peter Berrie
