Peter Michael Berrie

Peter Michael Berrie, 59, of Fairbanks died Sept. 5, 1998, in Seattle.
Peter was born Jan. 1, 1939, in Portland, Maine, to Albert and Juanita Hallowell
Berrie.His childhood was spent in Maine, and then Connecticut, where he graduated from
high school and received degrees from the University of Connecticut in Storrs. It was in
Connecticut where he met Elaine Bromley Berrie, his friend and former wife.
Peter also attended the University of Georgia and the University of Alaska
Fairbanks,studying both zoology and biology. Many of his works were noted and subsequently
published. Peter's many adventures earned him a Fellowship in the Explorer's Club as well
as numerous notations in various academic and scientific publications. Peter was an
accomplished writer and poet, and was both teacher and student. Most recently he spent his
time working with the Disabled Veterans in the Fairbanks area.
It is difficult to put in words the incredible personality and powerful presence that
Peter was. His friends will surely remember those times spent with Pete over a cup of
coffee when he shared his immeasurable knowledge or revealed the singular truth in a
question posed. Peter was a dynamic man who lived a life of his own design. His
friendships and love for his family were true and lifelong. His absence is a deep loss.
His daughter Dayna Berrie of Fairbanks and son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Theresa
Berrie of Virginia, and only grandchild Raymond, survive Peter.
Other survivors include his parents, Albert and Violet Berrie of Pennsylvania; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Mark and Terri Berrie of North Pole, Jon and Patricia Berrie of North
Dakota, and Albert and Karen Berrie of Michigan; sister Wendy Berrie of Florida; sister
and
brother-in-law, Rebecca and Ray Cummings of New Mexico; nieces Kristin Thomas and Michael
Berrie, his favorite walking partner; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and friends
throughout the country.
There will be no funeral services as per Peter's wishes.
