INTRODUCTION YEAR 10/11
We are very aware of the efforts that all parents make in ensuring that their children realise their potential in all facets of school life. The aim of this booklet is to help you in the support of your child's learning. The booklet contains an outline of the curriculum in each of the subject areas that your child is studying during this academic year.
For each area the information is presented in the following sequence:
1 Course content
2 Assessment procedures
3 Homework policy
4 Marking policy
5 Text books/resources used during the course. Other recommended texts if applicable.
6 Specialist equipment/materials required if applicable.
In addition the following information is relevant to all subject areas:
Homework - A homework timetable is published at the beginning of the academic year. This is recorded in the student planner. There are two homeworks per night on a fortnightly basis. Each subject is allocated 2 x 45 minutes per fortnight.
Assessments - Assessment grades in all subject are sent home during the autumn and spring terms of year 10 and the autumn term of year 11. Grades awarded are based upon attainment and effort. Challenging Target GCSE Grades are identified for each individual at the start of their course. Termly reviews of current performance are shared with parents. A full written report is sent home during the summer term of year 10 and the spring term of year 11. Internal examinations take place in the summer term of year 10 and mock GCSE examinations in the autumn term of year 11.
Marking - Marking in all subjects will be carried out in accordance with the whole school's assessment policy. All marking will consist of a written comment relating to the standard of work and improvements that can be made. Where grades are awarded these will relate to GCSE standards in the range of A*-G.
Parents Consultation Evenings - In year 10 consultation evenings take place in November and July. In year 11 a consultation evening takes place in February. If you wish to discuss progress at any other times further contact with teachers is welcomed.
How to help your child?
1 Show a keen interest in and appreciation of the work being done.
2 Use the information provided in this booklet to discuss the work being undertaken.
3 Encourage your child to take more responsibility for his/her own learning: to complete homework punctually and prepare thoroughly for examinations/assessments.
4 Try to provide the materials/resources at home which will support learning.
5 Monitor homework/assessment grades to ensure good progress is being made.
6 Contact the school if you feel progress is unsatisfactory or if you need further advice to enhance your child's progress.
